The Barber Dime is the smallest from the Barber Series which was minted from 1892 to 1916. Barber dimes are composed of 90% silver with 10% copper added for strength and durability.
The design for the Barber Series, which depicted a bust of Liberty on the obverse and an eagle on the reverse, was not only used for the dime, quarter and half dollar during this era. The Barber Series came about after a public deign competition failed to produce satisfactory alternatives. The US Mint Chief Engraver at the time Charles E. Barber, designed the coins himself.
The public had mixed reviews of the design and Teddy Roosevelt was one of the most vocal critical of the designs. Roosevelt felt that the designs lacked interest and was far more impressed with the coinage in Europe.
